Despite the fact that a great deal of Mac users still use OS X Snow Leopard, the people at VideoLAN are finding it necessary to drop support for Mac OS X 10.6 and older versions.

In releasing VLC Player 2.1.0 pre-3 for Mac OS X, VideoLAN is sad to inform its customer base that development will now be fully focused on OS X Lion and newer versions of the operating system.

The move is somewhat understandable considering the age of Snow Leopard, the high adoption rate of Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8), and the upcoming release of OS X Mavericks (OS X 10.9).

A new video capture module is also implemented for OS X users (based on AVFoundation, named AVcapture), and the new version also adds OS X Auhal output support for 6.1, 7.1, 8.0, and 8.1 playback and layouts.

OS X Auhal output support is also added for multi-buffer output devices, and the AudioQueue output for iOS and OS X has been rewritten.
