Photos app promises to make editing easy and fun

At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this summer, Apple announced plans to discontinue Aperture and replace it with a more streamlined Photos app that will bridge the gap between iOS and OS X in terms of photo editing and management.

Naturally, many users are worried that, with Aperture gone, native professional photo editing on the Mac will take a huge hit. After all, Apple suggested that Photos would be suitable for many types of users, which generally means simplistic. However, it’s also worth pointing out that there are powerful photo editing solutions out there that already do this and you couldn’t call these apps toys even if you wanted to. One such example is Pixelmator. In fact, Apple’s upcoming Photos app promises to be a lot like it.

On Reddit, there’s a topic that echoes a lot of concern regarding future Aperture updates. Thread starter cwmshy writes: “There's absolutely no indication on the store listing that the product has been discontinued. It doesn't seem right that new customers might buy it not knowing the product will never be improved.”

Others fear the same, and some are even more scared because they claim to have just bought the software. The less sensible participants to the discussion appropriately point out that everyone buys software as-is, not for the promise of future updates.

Finally, we’d like to offer our own take, and that is: don’t panic. Apple won’t leave Aperture users out in the cold even after Photos.app rolls out. Any update they see fit to deliver, they will. Just don’t expect any more exciting new features for Aperture, that’s all. And yes, over time, they’ll kill it altogether. It’s a fact of life.
