After raising tens of millions of dollars in donations for the Global Fund over the years, Apple is once again gearing up to generate proceeds for the fight against AIDS, something that U2 lead singer Bono deeply appreciates.

Founded in 2006 by Bono himself, PRODUCT (RED) is a licensed brand (spanning the likes of Nike, Apple, Starbucks, Coca-Cola, Beats, Gap, Armani, and others) that fights for raising awareness and funds to help combat HIV/AIDS in Africa.

In a press release issued by Apple this past weekend, the company announces a new initiative to promote and sell (RED)-themed App Store content to help raise new donations and hand over the proceeds to the Global Fund on December 1.

As always, the U2 frontman was ecstatic, “Apple isn't just in the fight to end AIDS,” he said. “They are setting a new bar for business, giving $75 million and counting to the Global Fund as part of their partnership with (RED). I couldn't be prouder to work with them,” said Bono, co-founder of (RED).

Tim Cook himself has made a statement, confirming that Apple has been a (RED) partner for eight years now, and that this year the Mac maker is pushing its biggest fundraising initiative yet, by donating portions of revenue from Apple’s retail and online stores from Friday and December 1.

In the Apps for (RED) initiative, high-profile developers like Finnish studio Rovio (makers of the Angry Birds series), Electronic Arts (with their FIFA series of football/soccer games), Apple itself (with Garage Band), and even Kim Kardashian (with her Hollywood-aspiring app).
