Before Apple made its announcement, reports had broken out that Chinese customers were not lining up for the launch, seemingly indicating low demand.

Regarding the Chinese launch, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China.
Cook reinforced the company’s stance regarding the Chinese market, noting that “China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products.”
