30th anniversary celebration should have included new hardware, and this design fits the bill better than anything else

A jaw-dropping new Macintosh design is making the rounds courtesy of Martin Hajek (via CURVED), and we can’t help but wish to have seen it made by Apple last year as the 30th Anniversary Macintosh.

Retaining the curves of the original model from 1984, the new Macintosh is ultra slim, boasts touch controls, and even sports a placeholder for the Floppy disk slot (in the form of an SD card port). Dutch designer Martin Hajek made these mockups for the people at CURVED, who then shared the work with the world.

Personally, the first thought that came into my head when I saw this concept was “Apple should have done this last year.” The company hasn’t surprised the fan base in a long time, and it’s something worth considering for Tim Cook and his troops. This is one of those what-would-Steve-have-done moments that would have scored massive points with the customer base.

Apple pulled a stunt like this in 1997 with the 20th Anniversary Macintosh that boasted a futuristic design and was somewhat limited edition. The computer was released in celebration of the company’s 20th birthday, not the Mac’s. Despite not being the most practical Mac shipped by Apple, it’s still regarded as a milestone release by critics.

So, what do you guys think? Should Apple have done this as part of the Mac’s 30th anniversary last year? Let us know in the comments.
