In the first week of 2015, Apple has sold apps and in-app purchases worth nearly half a billion dollars (€423 million), while the first day of the year was also the most profitable in the App Store’s business.

This was possible thanks mostly to the sheer number of titles available on Apple’s digital distribution venue. According to the Cupertino company, the App Store currently hosts 1.4 million binaries. Of those, 725,000 are designed for the iPad, the company said in a statement this week.

“Apple ignited the app revolution with the launch of the App Store in 2008, and since then, an entire industry has been built around app design and development,” said the iPhone maker.

There are 24 categories of apps to choose from, including photo & video, games, social networking, sports, travel, health & fitness, kids and more. The App Store also helped foster 627,000 jobs in the United States alone. Tim Cook said in a Tweet yesterday that Apple has created or helped create more than one million jobs in all 50 states.

iOS 8 was also responsible for the earth-shattering numbers, as it factored in some new frameworks and new ways for developers to code their apps (Swift programming language). The software also introduced Metal, a graphics technology that leverages the A7 and A8 chips making games look console-grade.
