Apple could soon discontinue its iconic portable music players

For a while now Apple has refrained from publicly disclosing iPod sales. “I think all of us have known for some time that iPod is a declining business,” Tim Cook said at Apple’s FY14 Q1 earnings call.

In other words, it’s no mystery that the iPod is dying, if it’s not already dead in the water. But how bad is it exactly for the portable media player? Well, according to the latest count, the iPod business has fallen another 52%.

That’s not to say the iPod isn’t still selling. It is, but in far fewer numbers than before. And the reason for that is simple. There’s an iPod embedded in every iPhone and iPad that Apple sells. Who needs a second device just to play music, right?

So what’s next for Apple? Well, if the iWatch rumors turn out to be true, we could see Apple discontinue the players altogether this year (at least the smaller models).
