Peter Oppenheimer to retire at the end of September, Apple has announced

Minutes ago, Apple put out a press release announcing the retirement of its Chief Financial Officer, Peter Oppenheimer. The CFO resigned for personal reasons, such as finishing the requirements for his pilot’s license.

Apple is sad to let Oppenheimer go, but they already have a man filling his position in September, when the transition of his departing is over. That man is Luca Maestri, Apple’s vice president of Finance and corporate controller, who will succeed Peter as CFO and will begin reporting to Tim Cook in fall.

The official announcement (embedded below) contains statements from CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer himself, who reveals the reasons behind his planned departure.

Although there may be more to his resignation than we are told in the press release, Oppenheimer’s resignation seems to be strictly for personal reasons. Like other executives before him (such as Tony Fadell), Oppenheimer is leaving in order to focus on his life.

“I love Apple and the people I have had the privilege to work with and after 18 years here, it is time for me to take time for myself and my family,” said Oppenheimer. “For quite some time, I have wanted to live on the central coast of California and get more involved at Cal Poly, my alma mater; spend more time with my wife and sons; travel to interesting parts of the world; and something I have wanted to do for years— finish the requirements for my pilot’s license.”
