Warranty provider SquareTrade has issued a report on iPad breakage rates with the following conclusion - iPad 2 owners break their tablets 3.5 times as often as iPad 1 owners.

The results of the study are based on data compiled from 50,000 SquareTrade iPad customers.

The warranty vendor found that 9.8% of iPad 2 owners had a failure from accidental damage within the first 12 months. Only 2.8% of iPad 1 owners experienced this in their first year.

SquareTrade estimates that almost 20% of its iPad 2 warranty customers will report accidental damage over 2 years, compared to 5.5% of iPad 1 tablets, mainly because the rate of accidental damage tends to happen on a straight line basis, said the company.

Makes you wonder what they’ll find with the iPad 3.

However, “outside of accidents, the iPad remains an extremely reliable device,” SquareTrade added. “Minimal normal use failure rates have even further decreased for the iPad 2.” The full study can be found here. And check out the graphics above for the top 8 scenarios of iPad breakage.
