Two months since the player was abruptly pulled

On the Videolan.org site, VLC for iOS 2.3.0 is advertised with the following lines of text: “VLC for iOS can play all your movies and shows in most formats directly without conversion. You can synchronize media to your device using WiFi Upload, iTunes, Dropbox, or direct downloads from the web.”

Only problem is it’s nowhere to be found. And it hasn’t been for the past two months. VideoLAN has been mum on the subject until recently, when lead developer Felix Paul Kuehne used the official forums to answer a question about the player’s upcoming availability. He blamed the iTunes Connect holiday shutdown for the player’s absence on the iTunes App Store, but confirmed that VLC for iOS was coming back to iPhones and iPads.

Well, the holiday season has come and gone, and Apple has been accepting new submissions for a few days now. We initially speculated that the group had already supplied Apple with a binary, while the Cupertino company probably queued VLC up for approval. The Mac maker is either juggling thousands of new submissions from December, or VideoLAN has yet to publish their updated binary.

For who’s asking, the reason why VideoLAN was forced to pull the app revolves around the player’s license (open source stuff). Interestingly, the page where Felix Paul Kuehne confirmed that VLC would make a return to the App Store is no longer available.

We'll be back with new information whenever we hear something new from the fine gents at VideoLAN.
