Apple charges $109, iCracked does it for just $80

Cracking your smartphone’s screen is a nightmare. Just thinking about it send shivers down your spine, but you know it can happen at any time.

A recent study has showed that almost a quarter of all iPhone users in 2013 had a broken display. Apple charges $109 (€95) to replace an iPhone 6 display, and $129 (€113) to swap a broken iPhone 6 Plus screen.

But now there’s a way to repair your damaged iPhone for much less. iCracked reportedly has over 50 repair points scattered across the United States and charges an average of $80 (€70) per screen replacement.

The firm, which apparently has a lot in common with iFixit, also mends broken ports and buttons, even even caters to non-Apple audiences (i.e. Samsung Galaxy phones).

If you ask me, that extra $30 (€26) I’d be paying Apple to do it knowing that my iPhone is in the hands of the makers doesn’t sound like all that much of a premium. Especially if something goes wrong during the repair process, or if I forget to back up my data. Suing iCracked for leaking my nudes doesn’t sound terribly advantageous.

Then again, I’ve never cracked a phone’s screen in my whole life. If I’d be doing it on a regular basis - as some seem to be doing - I’d probably be a lot more careful spending money on repairs. As it stands, I prefer being careful with the actual phone.
