The latest research from Nielsen reveals that Apple’s iPhone 4S is closing the gap between iOS and Android in terms of market share. According to the research firm, the phone’s launch “had an enormous impact in the proportion of smartphone owners who chose an Apple iPhone.”

Nielsen says that of those who got a new device within the past three months, 44.5 percent said they chose an iPhone, according to the company’s December survey results. This compares to just 25.1 percent in October.

Most interestingly, 57 percent of the new iPhone owners surveyed in December said they got the latest version of the handset -the iPhone 4S.

The study also found that 60 percent of those who said they got a new device within the last three months were smartphone carriers, as opposed to owners of feature phones.
