Parallels Inc., the company behind the world’s most popular virtualization solution for the Mac, has issued a loud and clear warning that Apple’s OS X Mavericks update breaks compatibility with older versions of Parallels Desktop.

If you’re running Parallels Desktop 6 or anything older than that and are planning to make the jump to OS X 10.9 this fall, consider upgrading your Parallels installation as well.

The company has issued what it calls an “urgent service notification for Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac users,” warning that “If you intend to upgrade to the upcoming Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9), please note that Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac will not support OS X Mavericks (10.9).”

The notice further warns, “You will not be able to launch your Windows virtual machine or directly use your files through Parallels Desktop 6.”

Users looking to continue using Parallels after the Mavericks upgrade are told to deploy Parallels Desktop 9 before installing Apple’s system update.

“Before you install OS X Mavericks; upgrade to Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac, as it is the only version available today ready for Mavericks,” according to Parallels Inc.
