Not delayed, but certainly not rushed out either

When Apple debuted its all-new Photos app at WWDC last year, the company promised an early-2015 release that would coincide with the discontinuation of iPhoto.

Not much has changed since. However, now we have a slightly more precise timeframe for its launch: spring. While that’s technically still early-2015 (in accordance with Apple’s trimestrial early/mid/late designations), we were hoping to see it roll out much sooner.

Not because we want iPhoto dead or Aperture left to rot, but because Photos is the first major software release from Apple in years. It’s an all-new app, and there’s quite a lot of buzz around it.

We took it for a spin earlier, and we plan to share our impressions with you in an extensive piece later today.

If you’re looking for a way to test drive Photos yourself, all you need to do is get OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 build 14D72i installed on a Mac. You’ll need developer credentials for that. Also worth noting is that Photos for OS X doesn’t work outside OS X 10.10.3, so if you’re thinking of asking a developer to hand you the app, it won’t work on any publicly-available Mac OS.

Keep those fingers crossed for a release next month.
