Apple has included a nifty feature in OS X 10.8.3 which allows customers to scan special gift cards and redeem media from the company’s iTunes Store.

The first new addition noted by Apple in the changelog for OS X 10.8.3 is “The ability to redeem iTunes gift cards in the Mac App Store using Mac’s built-in camera.”

Originally introduced in iTunes 11 last year, the feature uses a Mac’s built-in iSight / FaceTime web cam to scan a special type of iTunes gift cards to redeem music, videos, apps, books, etc. from the iTunes Store.

A demo of how the feature works can be seen above (courtesy of 9to5mac). The user can be seen holding up an iTunes gift card for the software to scan a special code inside a rectangle. Only certain gift cards work with the new feature.
