Next Mountain Lion release to require updates to Aperture and iPhoto

As we had previously predicted, Apple’s point-two incremental release of Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8.2 will be a compatibility update for iOS 6 customers (among other things).

People with access to the latest Mountain Lion beta seeded by Apple have discovered that the iCloud settings point to updated versions of Aperture and iPhoto, Apple’s photography applications.

Since iOS 6 brings Shared Photo streams as one of the key photo-centric features of the operating system, and since OS X Mountain Lion currently has no business using this feature, the required updates for iPhoto and Aperture on OS X 10.8.2 will bring Shared Photo streams to the Mac.

Apple this week released its first maintenance update to Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8.1, which you can download immediately at this address. OS X 10.8.2 should not poke its head out until later this fall, when iOS 6 debuts (alongside the much-hyped iPhone 5, of course).
