Near Field Communication, or NFC, is a fledging technology that allows portable device owners to pay for stuff by simply swiping the gadget over a sensor. While it makes perfect sense for the iPhone, Apple maintains that it’s not ripe yet.

Apple held its Q2 2013 earnings call yesterday. During the event, CEO Tim Cook disclosed a lot of details about the company’s plans for the future, including the possibility of seeing an NFC-enabled iPhone in the near future.

Cook says don’t bet on it. At least not for 2013, as the technology is still fledging.

He specifically said that mobile payments were “just getting started,” and that the technology is still “in its infancy.”

So if you were keeping your fingers crossed for an iPhone 5S that enables you to leave your wallet at home, you can untangle them right about now.
