Awesome service lets you save and insert blank icons (spots) wherever you want, create context for your wallpapers

Eight years into its existence, iPhones are still low in the customization factor when it comes to the underlying software. Apple only lets you move icons around and set wallpapers that either move or don’t, but that’s about it.

One thing you can’t do with iOS is arrange your icons any way you want. Sure, you can move them around, but any blank space left behind gets automatically filled with the closest app. In other words, iOS doesn’t allow blank spots. But that doesn’t mean it’s not doable.

Enter Makeovr, an online service that lets you download blank icons and position them in such a way that it gives your wallpapers more context. For example, you can put the clock icon on a Big Ben wallpaper, or have Mario (Nintendo’s lovable mascot) jumping over your icons.

Leveraging the Add to Home Screen ability in iOS, Makeovr comes with full instructions and even a bunch of wallpapers to get you started. Best of all, this apparent hack doesn’t require a jailbreak.

Technically, you’re filling your screen with blank icons. They seem invisible but once you enter “giggle” mode, they’re no longer so conspicuous (the X button appears on each of them).

To get started, visit makeover.io on your iPhone 5, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus.
