Alongside Mavericks 10.9.4, Safari 7.0.5/6.1.5, and Security Update 2014-003, Apple is now offering Apple TV Software Update 6.2, a maintenance update for set-top box owners which includes performance and stability fixes.

Support document ht4448 on Apple’s web site lists all the TV software updates ever released, complete with a list of changes for each update in part. Software Update 6.2 includes “general performance and stability improvements,” according to the document.

Some new features are said to be planned for the set-top box later this year, perhaps coinciding with the release of a new model altogether (featuring a faster processor, more storage, etc.).

For now, customers who own a second- or third-generation Apple TV can select Settings > General > Update Software and the box will check for an update. If 6.2 is shown as available, a download message should appear.

Users must click Download and Install to start the download process and allow the device to perform the update uninterrupted. This means users should not disconnect their Apple TV during the update process. The Apple TV status light may flash during the update, and once the device reboots the new firmware should be installed.

Users can also download Apple TV Software Update 6.2 as a standalone IPSW installer and use it to update their box through iTunes, a more cumbersome approach but an equally reliable one.
