The New York Police Department has kicked off a campaign to encourage “Apple users” to waste no more time on iOS 6 and consider installing iOS 7 as soon as possible. The reason? Security.

“Apple user” Michael Hoffman tweeted the news saying, “Four uniformed NYPD officers were at my subway stop tonight asking me to upgrade to iOS 7. Not a joke!”

He included the image displayed above (click for full resolution) in his tweet. The leaflet is a public awareness notice which targets Apple customers with the winning advice to download and install iOS 7 free of charge from Apple.

The main reason is not the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, as some might erroneously assume. That’s a hardware perk that comes with the iPhone 5s, and very few people own that phone right now.

The reason is a blend of security features implemented in iOS 7 which works across all iDevices currently in circulation today, including an improved version of Find My iPhone and a new feature called Activation Lock, which requires your Apple ID and password to power off and wipe the device.
