Mac security specialist Intego reports on the emergence of a new cross-platform Trojan that also affects Mac users and targets Minecraft gamers in particular. The malware is said to steal passwords.

Intego reports, “A new multi-platform Trojan that affects OS X and Windows has been discovered.”

“The threat is a Minecraft password stealer that purports to offer the user additional in-game features […] This sort of threat could be placed on a Minecraft forum to entice gamers.”

Initially reported on the Virus Total website, the Trojan is masked as a Java applet called “Minecraft Hack Kit.jar” which tricks the user by claiming to offer in-game features, such as banning other users, or “ForceOP.”

The threat has been confirmed as capable of stealing Minecraft “lastlogin” passwords which it then sends through secure email to the hacker’s Hotmail account.

Since it is able to update and delete itself and its plugins, the malware may present an even bigger threat in the future, Intego reports. As usual, the company touts VirusBarrier as the tool to use to stay out of harm’s way.
