Taiwanese newspaper Economic Times is making waves with a new report citing sources as saying that Apple will release a revamped MacBook Air, possibly equipped with a Retina display, in the third quarter of 2013.
The next-generation ultrabook is expected to launch in the 3rd quarter with the new (unreleased) Haswell processor platform from Intel.
Most importantly, the Chinese-language newspaper says the MacBook Air is getting a “facelift” as well, and that it “may also be equipped with Retina screen.” Currently Apple sells only two Pro machines with Retina displays - one 13-inch MacBook Pro, and one 15-inch MacBook Pro.
While Apple could theoretically fit any display technology into the MacBook Air, the ultra-thin computer will require a considerably more powerful battery to handle the added pixels (and backlight LEDs).
The system is said to be on its way to Quanta for assembly later this year.
