Apple seems to want the LCD and the cover glass fused together

The next-generation iPad Air might either be thinner or will pack a bigger battery, as Apple seems to be going with a new screen technology that will make more room inside the already-thin chassis of the hot-selling tablet computer.

A leak from China suggests that the second-generation iPad Air will use a new screen technology that fuses together the LCD with the tablet’s cover glass, in what would open up more space inside the tablet’s case.

Apple could either use the extra space to throw in a bigger battery, leading to more autonomy, or it could make the device even thinner than it currently is. Thinner is always better, but you don’t see too many people complaining about the current dimensions, do you?

The connectors seem to be located in different areas on the display, and “the LCD layer is already in the glass,” according to onemorething.nl, the site responsible for the leaked photos.

This would be a first for Apple, and if the technology proves worthwhile, we could well see it implemented in all iDevices, perhaps even in Macs. If these things are already leaking in photos, the new iPad could well be unveiled at Apple’s developer gathering in June.
