Renowned filmmaker Ken Burns has launched a free app that promises to offer “an entirely new way of looking at American history, only available on iPad.”

After producing documentaries for over three decades, Burns has returned to his work to carefully select scenes that illustrate recurring themes in American history, such as Art, Hard Times, Innovation, Politics, Race, War.

Burns explains: “In the playlist ‘Race,’ for example, you’ll see how moments from The Civil War, Baseball, Thomas Jefferson and Jazz are related.”

“The Ken Burns app was designed with iOS 7 and Retina Display in mind, so every full-screen video is rendered in stunning quality,” the developer, American Documentaries, Inc., adds.

The app comes free with only one playlist. Users looking to view five additional playlists can unlock the full version via in-app purchase for $9.99 / €7.33.

The Ken Burns app requires iOS 7.0 and works only with iPads. There are currently no other supported languages except English.
