If an Open Directory administrator leaves without sharing the password, the person instated in his / her position might have a hard time starting where that person left off.

That’s why Apple has released this handy OS X Server guide to show people how to reset the Open Directory administrator password in Mavericks.

According to KB article HT6044 on Apple’s Support web site, “You can reset the Open Directory administrator password in Mavericks without affecting user data. You might need to do this, for example, if an Open Directory administrator departs without sharing the password.”

The Cupertino giant then enumerates the steps a user needs to take to get the job done. Obviously, the task involves some fiddling with Terminal commands and such, so you’re more than welcome to follow Apple’s guidelines straight from the company’s Support site. I know I wouldn’t trust anyone else with these instructions.
