Louie Mantia does a fantastic job at making iOS icons truly flat

While Jony Ive’s iOS 7 redesign is nothing to sneeze at, the consensus among pretty much everyone who’s seen it or played with it is that more work is needed.

Case in point, ex Apple designer Louie Mantia decided to take a stab at the iOS 7 iconography bringing his own style and color palette to the table.

The image above is his work based on the new iOS 7 design, and I must say I feel this one is much closer to what the software should look like (at least the Home screen).

Mantia says, “I revisited that original task and took about a day to understand the new style. Simpler, smoother, subtler. While I don't employ the grid they created (and while I instead use the colors I chose), these feel interesting and balanced. Vibrant and bold, but not overbearing.”

He notes on Dribble that this remix isn’t necessarily a suggestion, “But being who I am, an icon designer, I took it upon myself to do something on my own.”

Fair enough. He’s a talented guy with background at Apple, and he might not want to hurt his chances for a new tenure at 1 Infinite Loop. Which is something Apple should seriously consider.
