Alpha-grade release should be treated with caution, not to be relied on

The Document Foundation today released LibreOffice 4.3.0 Alpha 1, the first snapshot of a new branch in the development of the office suite for Mac, Windows, and Linux computers.

Featuring a comprehensive word processor, spreadsheet, and drawing apps, LibreOffice also includes tools to create powerful presentations. It’s no match for Apple’s iWork or Microsoft’s Office suite, but it gets the job done.

Version 4.3.0 is at its first alpha build, and the release notes accompanying it are clear evidence of that. Even the savviest of users will have a hard time reading through the documentation for this update, but at least it’s there to provide some guidance. As a developer you’ll probably understand much more than the regular user.

The system requirements remain in place – 512 MB RAM and up to 1.5 GB available hard disk space – and the download links await below, as always. As noted above, be cautious with alpha-grade software, as it is prone to crashing and may cause loss of data. Use the latest stable build of LibreOffice (4.2.3) for work tasks. There are 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the suite.
