One new app in OS X 10.8 suggests Apple has “big” plans

While some like to sift through code strings for evidence of high-resolution displays on future Macs, less savvy users have more obvious places to make discoveries that lend credence to rumors of Retina display Macs.

Particularly, the icon of the newly-introduced Notes application in OS X Mountain Lion.

All other icons (including those of other new apps, like Game Center) are at their standard 512x512 pixel resolution, which is already large enough for any possible scenario throughout the OS.

The Notes icon, however, is sized at a whopping 1024x1024 pixels.

For a piece of artwork that mostly sits in the Dock on an area no larger than a square inch, one has to wonder what is the Notes app preparing for, if not for a finer net of pixels on future Macintosh computers running Mountain Lion?
