VideoLAN is out with a new update for users of the popular VLC Player for iPhone and iPad users, addressing a bug involving media file nomenclatures.

Staying on top of every reported issue on a weekly basis, the code-savvy bunch at VideoLAN has released yet another maintenance update for the popular VLC player on iOS.

Apparently the app would crash when users attempted to play back a file whose name was less than 6 characters long, and that includes the extension as well.

VLC for iOS can play movies in a plurality of formats without the need for conversion, and allows file synchronization with Dropbox, iTunes, and supports direct downloads. Users can also play back media through an embedded upload web server, and stream via UPnP.

VLC requires iOS 5.1 and is available free of charge.
