System maintenance utility Cocktail, developed by Maintain with power users in mind, has reached version 7.3 this week, adding new features and abilities, updated Automator actions and Help files, and the usual round of fixes for more stability and reliability.

A paid piece of software that sells for $14, or around €10, Cocktail can be downloaded for free to be used for ten consecutive times without any limitations. This way, Mac users can put the developers’ marketing to the test and see how the software works for them.

In addition to being an optimizer and cleaner, Cocktail is a general-purpose system maintenance and customization tool that allows users to tweak the OS X interface beyond what Apple would normally allow. In a sense, it’s much like a hacking tool.

The newest version available, Cocktail 7.3, adds the ability to clear Icon Services caches and clears saved application states. A new setting is available for “Allow power button to put the computer to sleep” (Disks – Sleep) and users can also employ an all-new “Utilities” menu that allows quick access to miscellaneous utilities and assistants.

The “Search for corrupted preference files” procedure has been improved, and Automator actions are updated. The same goes for the program’s Help files, which aid newcomers in getting started with Cocktail.

You can download Cocktail 3.7 only on Intel Macs with OS X 10.9 Mavericks installed, but there are builds (some free of charge) for older OS X versions dating all the way back to the mid-2000s.
