Aspyr Media announces minor performance update for popular shooter

Call of Duty fans playing the Black Ops installment on OS X are being treated to a new software update meant to improve performance.

Aspyr Media, the publisher of Call of Duty: Black Ops for Mac, says version 1.17 improves performance, but the release notes don’t include any specifics. Gamers are supposed to blindly update to the new version, hoping all will be well afterwards.

And at least one such gamer is having a bad experience with the new version so far. Writing a review in the U.S. Mac App Store, user SubEffect says “V1.17 When app was v1.16 was able to achieve about 60 FPS during gameplay. With v1.17 *Improved Performance update never get above 28 FPS. Almost unplayable now. Thanks!!! Well DONE! DO NOT BUY.”

Well, I guess that about says it all. Sure, it’s a lone voice so far, but you don’t want to be the echo, do you? My winning advice: install this update only if you absolutely must (like if your current experience is total garbage and any slight improvement will make your day).
