Creatives are told to save a copy of the currently installed version

Attempting to put an end to complaints coming from Logic customers who messed up their projects trying to update to the latest version, Apple this week posted new Support documents outlining the best practices for updating Logic Pro X and MainStage 2.

Apparently the most important step in updating to a new version of Logic is to actually back up the previous installation. Apple doesn’t expressly state that something or other may go wrong, but it seems some precautionary steps need to be taken when updating Logic.

According to the Cupertino giant, “When updating to Logic Pro X via the Mac App Store, the latest version will replace the current version you have installed. As a best practice, before updating (or troubleshooting) Logic Pro X, you should save a copy of the currently installed version as a backup by following these steps.”

Musicians are told to create a folder in Applications, rename it to include the current version they’re updating to, compress the existing Logic installation and move it to the new folder, and store it somewhere safe where they can remember to fetch it again if needed. The same procedure applies to MainStage 2, the live-performance tool for DJs.

After all this is done, users can finally try downloading the latest Logic Pro X and MainStage apps from the Mac App Store. Apple also urges musicians to “complete any active projects before updating to a new version of Logic Pro.”
