A new-generation iMac can now be configured with all-Flash storage, with customers being able to build a custom configuration featuring a 256GB or a 512GB solid state drive (SSD).

Flash storage is pretty expensive, but so is the Apple iMac itself. If you’re going to spend over a thousand dollars / Euro on the system, you might as well get the best functionality out of it.

Apple ships these babies with a 1TB hard disk drive. Its shiny platters spin at 5400 rpm, which isn’t exactly benchmark material, as most geeks reading this will agree.

Two flash storage options are now available for build-to-order configurations. You can replace the 1TB slow-read drive with a 256GB Flash drive, which adds $300 / €229 to your bill, or you can equip the iMac with 512GB of flash storage, which requires you to pay a $600/ €458 premium.
