New YouTube app comes with ads that cannot be removed

Apple today pushed out an update over-the-air to enable new channels on Apple TV set-top boxes, while bringing the YouTube app in line with other TV products that bundle the service.

YouTube’s new Apple TV app looks a lot more suitable for TV boxes, but the client now displays ads that customers can’t opt out of. YouTube also now uses OAuth for security purposes.

Other channels “induced” to Apple TV hardware as part of the update include Conde Nast’s The Scene, Fusion, Dailymotion, and martial-arts channel UFC (subscription only). Apple has slapped a “new” badge on all these channels to highlight them better.

Note that these channels aren’t part of any downloadable software update from Cupertino, though you might need to be on the latest firmware if you’re bent on receiving these channels on your respective box.

Apple TV Software Update 7.0 should be enough to ensure that Apple will send these over to your house as well, but just to be absolutely sure your box is ready to receive the goods, download and install the November 7.0.2 update.

Apple doesn’t say if the new channels are for third-generation box owners only, but there’s a good chance that’s the case. Jailbroken users needn’t do anything, especially if they want to keep their jailbreak.
