For reasons unknown, Apple keeps hiring journalists

After hiring Anandtech’s long-time jurno Anand Shimpi, this week Apple has reportedly snagged Macworld’s Chris Breen, one of the tech magazine’s oldest editors.

In a farewell post on his personal blog, Breen indirectly confirms that he’s headed for Apple - calling it “a Cupertino-based technology company you may be familiar with” - before he gets too old to do anything useful - “try something different before I don the large shorts and spend the bulk of my remaining days looking for my misplaced spectacles.”

A nice way of putting it, but I’d say the real reason was the irresistible offer of working at Apple. That, coupled with the fact that life at Macworld probably wasn’t that great anymore.

Some of you may remember that IDG fired almost the entire staff of Macworld’s print business last year, in what undoubtedly marked a sign of things to come for the online publication as well.

Following numerous changes in the web scene, many tech news sites and blogs have been forced to take drastic measures to adjust their business as of late, with some even shutting down completely (i.e. TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Web Blog).

I wish Breen - whom I deeply envy - nothing but the best in his new role at Apple, whatever that role may be.
