During today’s cash-centric conference call, Apple’s chief executive officer revealed to an analyst that the new iPad was off to a great start.

So great that it sold a record amount of units, despite numerous reports saying the new iPad is pretty much just an iPad 2 with a better screen.

The updated tablet computer became physically available on Friday.

"We had a record weekend and we're thrilled with it," Cook said, responding to a question asked by Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster.

Cook declined to mention actual numbers, but the company’s press room should soon feature a news release confirming just how many new iPads Apple has sold in the first few days of availability.

Munster is one of the many analysts who believe Apple will introduce a full-fledged television product in the near future.
