Hackers suggested Apple could hand over iMessages to the NSA if asked

After a security group called QuarksLab claimed that Apple could intercept iMessages and read their contents, Apple has responded with a statement saying they’d have to reengineer their systems to do that, and it’s not worth the fuss.

QuarksLab wrote in their research paper, “Apple can read your iMessages if they choose to, or if they are required to do so by a government order.” They presented these seemingly alarming findings at the Hack in the Box conference on Thursday, spurring fears that, if the NSA asked Apple to hand over some iMessages, they’d do it.

Apple is countering these claims with a statement via spokeswoman Trudy Muller, who tells All Things D that “iMessage is not architected to allow Apple to read messages.” The research discussed theoretical vulnerabilities that would require Apple to re-engineer the iMessage system to exploit it, and Apple has no plans or intentions to do so.
