Upgraded set-top box only required FCC approval, no new features

Speaking to the press on rumors about a new TV device, an Apple spokesperson has confirmed that the hardware in question is actually a different model with different (but not upgraded) components.

When reports emerged that Apple was shipping an Apple TV set-top box with a new codename, speculation began regarding a potentially upgraded television experience for end users.

As it turns out, that’s not the case.

An Apple spokesperson tells TNW, “We sometimes make component changes which require an updated model number for regulatory approval. The component changes we made don’t affect product features and Apple TV customers will continue to have the same great user experience.”

Well that’s that then. But don’t be disappointed. If Apple isn’t updating the puck-sized TV box, perhaps they’re finally rolling out their much-hyped full-fledged HDTV.
