Following the debut of a new generation of iMacs yesterday, Apple has released an EFI firmware update to address a flaw with the computers.

According to the release notes accompanying iMac (Late 2013) EFI Update 2.1, “This update addresses an issue which may cause a black screen to appear when installing Windows 7 or Windows 8 using Boot Camp Assistant if both an external optical drive and USB thumb drive are connected to the system.”

There’s more. Apparently the update also ensures that your shiny new iMac boots by default into OS X, if you have a Windows 8 installation as well.

Weighing in at 8.7 MB, iMac (late 2013) EFI Update 2.1 applies to OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 (12E4022) or newer versions.
