Apple has released the latest Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update for OS X customers, adding support for RAW images coming out of new-generation Canon, Nikon, and Sony cameras.

The company offers these updates because professional photographers require a native way for the Mac and their DSLR to communicate and share digital camera RAW formats, which retain more image information than traditional JPEGs and can produce better results when used with photo editing apps like Aperture and Photoshop.

OS X Mavericks provides system-level support for digital camera RAW formats from thousands of camera models.

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.05 was released yesterday evening through Software Update and Apple Support Downloads. According to the Cupertino giant, “This update adds RAW image compatibility for the following camera to Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11: Canon EOS Rebel T5 / 1200D / Kiss X70, Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II, Nikon D4S, [and] Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10.”

Weighing in at 7.3 MB, Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.05 calls for OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and OS X Mavericks 10.9 with iPhoto 9.4.3 or Aperture 3.4.5 installed.

The installer package supports dozens of different languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Polish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and many others.
