Apple has announced a new effort to bring the engineering teams behind the company’s two operating systems under a single hood. Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, will be the head of the new group

Craig Federighi will lead both iOS and OS X, Apple confirmed in a press release announcing a major restructuring of its executive branch.

According to the announcement, “Apple has the most advanced mobile and desktop operating systems, and this move brings together the OS teams to make it even easier to deliver the best technology and user experience innovations to both platforms.”

The move may not be directly tied to the upcoming departure of Scott Forstall (also confirmed in the announcement), as Apple has been trying to unify the desktop and mobile environments for years now.

In other words, there’s a good chance this initiative would have materialized even under Forstall’s continued employment at Apple.
