Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, has issued a terse tweet referencing the growing malware and security threats faced by Android customers, suggesting iOS is a far better solution.

Schiller’s tweet reads, “Be safe out there,” and includes a link to a study from F-Secure (PDF) which looks at the rise in malware on Android over the last few months.

According to the security firm, “Android malware has been strengthening its position in the mobile threat scene. Every quarter, malware authors bring forth new threat families and variants to lure more victims and to update on the existing ones.”

Looking at the fourth quarter of 2012 alone, the company notes that almost 100 new families and variants of Android threats have been discovered.

According to F-Secure, “[this] almost doubles the number recorded in the previous quarter. A large portion of this number was contributed by PremiumSMS—a family of malware that generates profit through shady SMS-sending practices—which unleashed 21 new variants,” it adds.
