Unless you want to damage the display when you close it

Apple is warning owners of Retina display MacBook Pros that leaving covers or other material on the palm rest surface of the computer could damage the display when the lid gets closed.

Published yesterday to the Support section of Apple.com, knowledge base article TS4384 says that “Leaving palm rest covers or other material on the palm rest surface of your computer could result in damage to the display when you close it.”

Titled “MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012): Do not use palm rest covers,” the document includes a brief explanation as to why this happens. According to Apple, “the clearance between the display and the palm rest area is engineered to tight tolerances,” to enable the thin design of the MacBook Pro.

In this respect, “the added thickness may interfere with the designed resting position of the display.” As a final word of advice, Apple clearly states: “As a best practice, keep the palm rest clear of any material.”

Apple Support articles that warn against certain types of usage generally include imagery to depict the actual area referred to in the text – in this particular instance, the palm rest area. Unfortunately, KB article TS4384 includes no graphics whatsoever.
