Apple is discontinuing the iPhone 3GS, the third-generation smartphone shipped in 2009, a company spokesperson has confirmed.

Speaking to All Things D, this spokesperson reportedly said that the iPhone 3GS would no longer be a part of the lineup sold by the Cupertino, California-based technology mammoth.

Furthermore, the spokesperson added, “the iPhone 4 will become Apple’s new entry-level offering and has already replaced the iPhone 3GS in that spot in the Apple Store,” according to the report. The current price tag on the iPhone 4 is now $0, as the screenshot above shows.

The iPhone 4S has been bumped down too. It now sells for half its original price, also tied to a two-year carrier contract (AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint, in the United States).

Customers visiting the Apple online store to pre-order the brand new iPhone 5 now have a waiting time of two weeks before the handset ships to their door.
