Apple could be on track to deliver an updated version of its cheap AirPort Express router at the company’s rumored September 10 event, where new iPhones are to be unveiled.

Although this is mere speculation at this point, there is some indication that Apple could in fact pull the existing AirPort Express base stations in favor of updated versions which boast 5G wireless capabilities.

Various retail outlets that usually carry the hardware, including Apple’s own brick-and-mortar stores, are experiencing stock-outs, according to sources speaking to AppleInsider.

Moreover, with Apple’s shift to 802.11ac support across its Mac lineup, the AirPort range of Wi-Fi base stations will have to be on feature parity soon.

If the new iPhones and iPads about to be released this year also come with 5G Wi-Fi, the refresh will be imminent.
