Fifth-generation Dodge Caravan carrying camera array seen driving around the Palo Alto area in California

Amid rumors of Apple working on a self-driving car or new mapping technology at best, a video has emerged showing one of the company’s cars rolling on the streets of Palo Alto, the home town of the late Steve Jobs.

A 24-second video shot by someone who insisted on holding the phone vertically shows one of the many fifth-generation Dodge Caravans leased to Apple carrying a huge camera array, and something that resembles a motion sensor tied to one of the back wheels.

Many have speculated that Apple is looking to diversify its Maps offerings and nothing more, but it’s hard to believe that all this effort and secrecy is only for a new and improved street view.

No. With all the major news agencies reporting employee poaching from Tesla, details about a facility being set up to test car-related technologies by a team made up of hundreds of engineers, the recent hiring of a high-profile Mercedes-Benz designer, a former Ford employee on its payroll, and many other similar tidbits, there’s no way in hell Apple isn’t planning a smart car for us.

Being skeptic is one thing. Being blind is a different matter altogether.
