Apple has released three separate firmware updates for owners of its MacBook computers, addressing a flaw involving the battery and system hangs.

MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.8 is recommended for MacBook Pro (mid 2012) models. MacBook Pro Retina SMC Update v1.2 targets 13-inch MacBook Pro laptops with Retina display (late 2012 models), and 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display (mid 2012 models).

Finally, MacBook Air SMC Update v1.9 is aimed at MacBook Air (mid 2012 and mid 2013 models). All updates contain patches for the same set of flaws in each configuration.

Apple says, “This update addresses rare issues where the battery unexpectedly stops functioning, the system does not recognize the battery, or the system hangs when the battery charge reaches less than one percent.”

MacBook Pro and MacBook Air users must apply their respective update on either OS X 10.6.8, OS X 10.7.5, or OS X 10.8.2 (or later).

MacBook Pro Retina users require OS X 10.7.5 or OS X 10.8.2 (or later) for their respective update.
