Only resolution available is to restart the computer from the power button

Apple is acknowledging a minor issue with the latest version of the iMac (introduced earlier this week) involving “Distorted or black screen when waking from AirPlay Mirroring.”

KB article TS5176 says the newest (Late 2013) iMac models may be susceptible to issues when waking from sleep during an AirPlay Mirroring session. The symptom is described by Apple as follows:

“When waking from sleep with a iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) computer using AirPlay Mirroring to an availble AirPlay device on the network, you may see video distortion or a black screen. With the black screen, you can redraw the desktop by moving the mouse.”

Apple says, “to remove the computer from AirPlay mode and resolve the issue, you restart the computer by holding down the power button.”

So far that’s the only fix available, but Apple promises to update the support document in question “as more information becomes available.” The company doesn’t say whether or not a software fix is in the works.
