Some photos may be much darker than expected when importing an older library

Apple has posted a Support document describing a situation where customers may see their photos much darker in the new Aperture 3, especially when imported from an Aperture 2 library.

According to the Cupertino company, “When a library created in Aperture 2 is opened in Aperture 3 for the first time, some photos may be much darker than expected.”

If that’s you, Apple says not to worry as this is something that happens with images that have had the Enhance adjustment brick applied, “with changes to the Saturation slider but not the Contrast slider.”

The latest version of Aperture sets the Contrast slider from 0 to 1 during a conversion. Apple doesn’t say whether or not this is intentional, but I’m guessing it’s not. Anyway, that’s why your images look darker than expected.

Finally, the Mac maker outlines the resolution: “To fix this issue, move the Contrast slider in the Enhance adjustment brick back to 0 for any affected photos.”
