OS X 10.9 introduces a new way to keep tabs on your favorite sites

As of today, web sites who wish to keep their install-base up to date every other minute can use Safari Push Notifications, a new feature pioneered by Apple in OS X Mavericks.

Expected to arrive later today, OS X Mavericks has a new Safari browser which supports push notifications directly from the sites you follow.

As a site owner, you can now use the Apple Push Notifications Service and send notifications to your users. An alert will appear right on their Mac desktop, even when Safari isn’t running.

Similar in nature to the push notifications for apps, these banners display a website icon and notification text, which users can click to go right to the desired content.

Apple’s event later today will most likely witness the public release of OS X Mavericks, alongside the planned iPad announcements.
